Dropping Dimes is trying out a new feature. Fantasy 30 intends to rank all of the NBA teams in terms of fantasy power. A list like this tends to lead to a lot of disagreement and discussion, but the hope is that these rankings will be fluid and updated as the year goes on. Thanks to Ron Chow for the assist. In addition to publishing updates on the Fantasy 30, once in a while we hope to produce sister articles that focus on a specific team and its roster.
#1: Los Angeles Lakers: Kobe Bryant ranks as a top four fantasy player this year. The Lakers employ two fantasy-worthy starters for center in Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. Lamar Odom has played well coming off the bench. Jordan Farmar has sleeper point guard potential, and the team also employs three-point threats like Derek Fisher and Vlad Radmanovic. All of this adds up to the Lakers being top dog early in the year.

Rumors: Nuggets to Swap Iverson for Billups?
Posted by Scott Sargent Categories: Trades, Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets,
The Boston Globe is reporting that the Denver Nuggets are working on a deal that would send Allen Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess. With Billups making about half as much as Iverson, McDyess (now relegated to the bench) is obviously a piece of the trade puzzle to make the salaries match.
The Nuggets are clearly in salary dumping mode, but what does the deal possibly mean for fantasy owners?

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 3, PIck 11 - Carmelo Anthony

Overrated or underrated? Is it possible for a top five scorer in the league to be underrated? Though their games differ greatly, ‘Melo splits the fantasy nation into two camps similar to how Dwight Howard does. One camp sees the warts, the other sees the aspects of the game to push an advantage.
After the jump, let us see if this Olympian power forward has the game to help your team out this year win the gold.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick 5 - Marcus Camby

The Fig Cap: Upon hearing news of his trade from the Nuggs to the Clips, Camby replied, “NOOOOOOOOOOO!”
Yeah, Marcus Camby is no longer a Denver Nugget, which absolutely makes no sense considering he was traded for an OPTION of a second round draft pick from the Los Angeles Clippers. Yes, Camby will be in the Clip Joint, but how happy will he be going from a playoff-caliber team that has the presence of Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony to a team that historically “messes it up.” Okay, so the signing of Baron Davis could work out very well for the Clips, but still… it’s the Clippers! Which is why I don’t understand how they got Camby for NOTHING! Yeah, I know… the Nuggs were shedding salary and clearing up cap space. Ugh… still ugly.
What WON’T be ugly, however, is getting the Camby Man on your fantasy squad.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 10 - Allen Iverson

Allen Iverson will be 33-years-old at the start of the upcoming 2008-09 NBA season, but does age really affect Allen Iverson? Well, “the answer” (sorry, bad pun intended) is an emphatic NO! Iverson seems to be an immortal on the hardwood and will be entering his 13th season in the league. Wow, so I feel old. I still remember when AI crossed over Michael Jordan in Iverson’s rookie year during the 1996-97 season. SICK! And, guess what? Iverson can still make it happen on the hardwood and therefore, your fantasy basketball squad.

To the three voters for the All-NBA team that did not name Chris Paul to the first team; you need to seriously have your head examined. Two voters picked Steve Nash instead and one vote went to Tracy McGrady. Come on, people! To pick Nash ahead of Paul means you have not watched ball since last season. The Hornets had a better record, Paul did more with less established talent around him, not to mention he had superior overall stats. As for McGrady, I guess it was a nod to the Rockets’ winning streak.
Nash was in action last week. Does he get to move on? Paul suits up this week, so check out who we have him partnered with? And the picture gives you a preview of who else is part of our hype match-ups this week!

Also see some science being dropped in the latest installment of Sarge’s Wire to Wire and Brandon’s Beyond the Arc. And if you have some extra idle time, you can think up all the different ways to interpret B’s Fig Cap.
For now we take a walk on the reality side to focus on the playoff races going on in the NBA. Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets have been surprisingly great all year; how deep into the playoffs will they go?

The shoot-out in the wild Western Conference has been great to follow, has it not? The top nine teams are separated by only 6.5 games. Every day the standings shift. Right now Phoenix sits in sixth while Dallas ranks seventh! This bodes well for fantasy owners as the best teams in the West should all be playing meaningful games down the stretch. Here’s a rundown of each team’s fantasy playoff schedule.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007 Round 3, Pick 2 - Marcus Camby

It’s no secret that Marcus Camby gets hurt. A lot. Make that A LOT! However, last season, Camby showed up, dressed in his uni, and took the floor to actually play a game and not do his best Richard Simmons impersonation and only cheer his teammates on. Nope, Camby Man did his thing and played a very respectable (for him, amazing) 70 games. Now the question is, can he do it again? Can Camby actually be all that he can be, blocking and boarding like there’s no tomorrow because there just might not be? I’m taking the risk with this pick at this point of the draft and going all in thinking that he can. All I can say is thank goodness I don’t have any money on this bet, but I just can’t resist the talent and big-time upside!

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 2, Pick 10 - Carmelo Anthony

The Fig Cap: LeBron might have gone first in this draft, won the Rookie of the Year award, named to numerous All-Star teams, All-NBA teams, and achieved a commercial appeal I can only hope to reach, but DOES HE HAVE ONE OF THESE?!?! Yeah… didn’t think so.
Okay, I’m not saying that Melo is this great fantasy basketball stud that should be considered for the first round, afterall it’s not like he’s LeBron or anything (the comparisons will NEVER end), but Melo might be better than you think. And I start off with this preface because considering that Melo has this stigma of only being a scorer in the fantasy scheme of things (no, not that type of “scoring” you pervs), he actually brings a little more than just huge point production to a fantasy basketball team. I suspect that Melo could fall into the third round in most drafts as the savvy fantasy basketball manager doesn’t really put a lot of credence in the points category, but the other “secondary” cats such as steals, free-throw percentage, etc. So, how does Melo measure up? Let’s take a jab at this and get down with the analysis… yes, the pun was fully intended.
